I have a Pathfinder 4x4. You have to be doing stupid things to spin all 4 in it.
I try to do that as much as possible when the snow is deep.

My parents have never bought anything but all-season tires for any of their cars ever in the 30-something years they’ve owned cars, yet somehow neither of them have gotten into accidents come winter that are their fault and manage to get to work and back just fine. I’ve never had issue either, even in my M3 which was on really aggressive all-seasons. Ignore the holier than thou whiners.

Eh, just know where the curbs are, make sure the lot is clear, and accept that anything that happens is your fault. Hence why I never go do snownuts in parking lots, because I’d rather not have to explain any damage.
Is there a vehicle in your household that has snow tires that you can use if you need to drive when there’s snow coming down? Because I totally get why you might not have snow tires for your car.

Pretty much this.
But yeah, I am of the opinion that if you live in a state where the winters are consistently snowy/icy, you should have winter tires. Especially if you’re someone who is into cars and actually understands the differences between the tire compounds/treads.

Ah, I misunderstood your comment. I thought you were being sarcastic. My bad.
Especially with the ESP off, I can absolutely get my car to spin all four wheels. Flooring it from a stop up a steep hill with the nannies off will do that. But I’ve never gotten it stuck/not been able to make a hill. In fact, only once have I been unable to get up a hill with ESP off, and as soon as I turned it back on it gripped and went.

I agree with you. I like the fact that Quebec requires you to have snow tires on your vehicle during the winter and kind of wish they would put that in place in Ontario. I get there’s an issue with having to pay for another set of tires (shit’s expensive, yo), but they’re a lot cheaper than having to pay out as the result of an accident.

I grew up in RWD vehicles with all seasons (preferably nearly bald) in north NY winters. Usually, it was either a 20 year old pickup, or mid-80s Grand Marquis/Crown Vic. All-season away!

Ironically, the BMW ended up getting converted to snow tires after my dad drove it in the snow on the summer tires, slid into a curb and bent a rim and a tie rod.
Maybe if I slide the Audi into a curb he’ll get me summer tires too.

I get the price complaint if you’re someone who’s in a tough spot financially and daily driving a car worth under $10k or so because it’s all you can afford. In that sort of situation a few hundred bucks can be a lot to swallow. What gets me are the idiots I see bitching about not being able to afford winter tires for their relatively new sports car (saw a lot of these type of comments on FR-S/BRZ groups lately). If you can’t afford a used set of winter tires on steelies (a decent used set can be found for $300-400 all day), then you can’t afford to own that car.

No, no worries. That Nissan isn’t a DD any more, but my DD has AWD and all seasons. It’s all that I need, and probably more than that.
Agree that it’s silly to insist that EVERYONE get snows. We all have different needs.

Exactly. I sold auto parts for a year and a half, so I have an idea about maintenance expenses and annual costs. This is why I don’t own a car, because even if I bought a $2k car, I probably couldn’t afford it.

True. I would love to have them, and I think it would be safe if everyone did, but it’s not like your car becomes some terrifying weapon of mass destruction with only all-seasons.
But don’t drive with summer/sports tires in the snow. That actually won’t work.

Yeah I tried summer tires once in a RWD BMW out of ignorance. It did not work. AT ALL.
Stuck in about an inch of snow and maybe a 5 percent grade, couldn’t climb the hill with traction control on or off, starting in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear.
Waited for the snow to melt by morning, then immediately bought winter tires for it.

I find those that have never used winter tires are less receptive to the idea. I never had them until I was in my early 30's and wasn’t aware of their effectiveness until I experienced it. I’ve driven RWD performance cars on summers with no thought given and managed to stay out of trouble, but now knowing I’d much rather have the snows. Knowing I can avoid a potential issue due to added traction agrees with me.
I’d prefer a RWD on snows than an AWD on all seasons. They are that effective.

My dad’s old car (Ford Flex FWD) and his current car (X3 AWD) both had/have snow tires. I drive both regularly and am well aware of their effectiveness. However, my dad has decided that he can’t justify hundreds of dollars on a second set of tires for an AWD car worth $3500. And I resent the idea that I’m some sort of menace to society just because of the all-seasons.

Guess how much trouble our front-wheel-drive CX-5 had here with all season tires? None.
Snowfalls like that are a freak occurrence here in Kentucky yes. So, I’m not spending money on snow tires to cruise around on dry (or just rain soaked) pavement for half the year. Personally, during any of our big snows here, I’ve never had trouble with all seasons. Hell, my old Grand Am (on all season tires) got my grandparents and I out of the house during a hellacious ice storm in 2009 that left us without power for nine days. Out of our three vehicles, it was the only one that could move.

I just live in a place where we get snow one-two times a year and then I deflate my tires a little bit and the Lexus sails. Or... we just jump in the FJ40 and have fun. For the most part snow is apocalyptic here bough and everything shuts down so we don’t have to go anywhere.

Ugh. This is the problem with seattle. We had a big storm like 5 years ago. My car and its summer tires went completely and totally out of commission (couldn’t move at all.)
I was like “well its seattle. It wont snow again, but i’ll just get some nice all seasons so if it does next year, i’ll be semi-okay in a pinch.”
It proceeded to not snow at all for 4 straight years.
This summer my friend offered me a killer deal on some very nice very lightly used summer tires. I put them on my car, since it hadn’t snowed and at that point the all seasons were starting to need replacing. Now the weather forecast says it’ll actually snow this year. I just can’t win.

I don’t live in Alaska or Canada and they plow the roads by me fairly well. I’ve never been stranded by all seasons. That said I have driven the same car back to back with all seasons and winter tires on snowy pavement. The difference was very noticeable.

I spent an entire year driving the Niva (including 6 months as a daily driver in a city that doesn’t have enough plowing budget to hit everything) on mismatches bald, dry-rotted, age-cracked, hard-as-rock all-seasons. No issues at all either, I mean stopping wasn’t always great, but that had a lot to do with shitty brakes that didn’t do much until the pedal went low enough the “panic” circuit went and basically locked ‘me up. After rather forcibly replacing the tires with some that legally count as winter tires, I still found myself sliding around.
Sure, I could launch harder, stop a bit better (the brakes still sucked), and didn’t understeer quite as much, but I wouldn’t have called it a night and day difference. Like I’d been doing before, I knew my vehicle’s limits and could drive accordingly, taking full advantage of my vehicle’s driving characteristics, even in unconventional manoeuvres if I saw fit. (“What’s a Scandinavian flick, officer?” is a thing I’ve never had to say, I promise.)
You know your vehicle, you know what it can and can’t do, and adjust your driving accordingly. Yes, you’re definitely at a disadvantage not having winter tires (the difference between the older BFG KO’s and the Grabber AT2's was an actual night and day difference for my Jeep that was primarily RWD) but so long as you aren’t stupid, don’t drive like an idiot who thinks snow and pavement have the same coefficient of friction, and realize that pushing the accelerator harder doesn’t always equate to the vehicle accelerating faster, and applying the brake harder doesn’t always mean you stop more quickly, and turning the steering wheel more doesn’t always make you turn more sharply, and don’t panic if you start to slid a little, you’ll still do fine.
It’s not like winter tires turn you into a traction God either. We all saw that recent video from Quebec where winter tires are provincially mandated, after all. Driving is more about knowing and paying attention to what you’re doing than it is about the equipment, especially on the street.
Winter tires are still a good idea.
